After a serendipitous meeting with another incredible photographer, Claire Kerbs, we quickly came to the conclusion that we needed to plan a session together to test out some creative ideas and new gear. Every once in a while there comes a session that is so much fun and so freeing that it completely reignites my love for photography and working with people. The session with Claire and our amazing models, Keola and Matty, ended up being one of those.
Keola and Matty are both talented musicians so we knew we wanted to incorporate that part of their relationship as well as soft, warm, intimate summer vibes. We planned to each shoot a roll of Super 8 as well so we told Keola and Matty that the goal was to act like they were in their very own indie movie. They totally delivered.
Our location near Auburn ended up being full of wildflowers and the soft light was like a dream so we all talked and laughed and ran around the meadows for a few hours. I think it ended up being fun for everybody and a major refresher during busy season.

I learned a few things that may help future clients as well:
– The absolute best way to get natural photos with your partner is to 1) be in love and 2) constantly talk to each other during the session. Honestly, act like the camera isn’t even there! As a photographer it’s my job to get all the right angles and time things right. Don’t worry about constantly smiling. If you’re enjoying yourself it will show on camera.
– Incorporate hobbies, props, activities, etc. If there’s something you love to do together let’s photograph it! This adds a personal unique touch to photos and makes for a more cinematic vibe as well. Treat it like a date!
– Be open to new ideas. Sometimes pose prompts can sound funny or uncomfortable but they can create magic. Take it all in stride and have fun with it. Constant movement is key to natural photos.
– If you have a vision let’s talk about it ahead of time. One of the key parts to this session is that Claire and I created a Pinterest board with the vibes we were going for and shared it with Keola and Matty ahead of time. It really helps to make sure everybody is on the same page before we start taking photos.
The flowers at this location are absolutely incredible at the end of May into June each year. Fill out my contact form to book!
